He admitted assaulting the woman to her severe injury in Brandon Parade East on October 1 last year. He also admitted spitting on a police officer.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard McKillop has previous convictions and was on early release from prison at the time. He was also subject to a supervision order.

The assault happened around 4.30pm and was captured by CCTV cameras.

Aga Mathieson, prosecuting, told the court: “Parties were intoxicated and swapping cigarettes.

“The complainer approached the accused who placed his two hands on her and pushed her.

“This caused her to fall back and bang her head on a brick wall.

“A member of the public went to help and saw she was soaked in blood from a deep cut to the top of her head.

“She was taken to hospital where the three-inch long laceration was closed with six staples.”

McKillop walked away from the scene and police officers found him in nearby Watson Street.

He spat at a female officer, causing saliva to land on her face and shoulder.

Defence lawyer Matthew McGovern said McKillop was “remorseful” about the serious injury.

The solicitor stated: “The woman had been annoying him and his friend and was trying to get a cannabis joint from him.

“Due to her aggressive approach, he pushed her once. There was no follow-up or sustained attack.

“He didn’t intend to push her over and when he walked away he didn’t realise she was badly injured.”

Passing sentence, Sheriff Colin Dunipace told McKillop: “This is a serious matter and a significant custodial sentence must be imposed. You have a significant record for violence.”
